Check out our Online Seed Starting Workshops for 2022! Get a head start on a beautiful home garden. Each class includes materials that may be picked up at the Garden Visitor Center during open hours.  Registration includes seed kit with materials to be picked up at the Garden Visitor Center, link to recorded class taught by our horticulture staff, information sheet, and access to follow-up video with next steps.

WILDFLOWER & POLLINATOR GARDENS 

Curate your own pollinator garden! Learn to stratify wildflower seeds and wake them from their slumber. Wildflower gardens can offer a lower-maintenance option to your landscape while also attracting pollinators like butterflies and bees. Learn how to prepare, plant and cultivate a seed mix for wildflower gardening from Garden horticulturist Matthew Southall.

Materials are included with class registration and include a variety of seeds, potting mix and small plastic container for growing seeds.  Seeds include: Echinacea purpurea, Gaillardia pulchella, Ammi majus, Chrysanthemum carinatum (painted daisy), Cosmos bipinnatus, Asclepias syriaca, Zinnia elegans, Collinsia heterophylla, Foeniculum vulgare, Coreopsis lanceolata and Cosmos sulphereus.

 ADVANCED SEED HARVESTING AND STARTING WORKSHOP

Join Ellen Weatherholt, Curator of the Children’s Discovery Garden & Lakeside Promenade, for a workshop focusing on advanced seed starting techniques to take your gardening to the next level.  Participants will be provided a mix of seeds.  Some will be ready to plant, others are still in their pods, and were grown and harvested from the Tulsa Botanic Garden 2021 summer display.  All varieties provided are suited to the Tulsa growing climate. We will focus on proper timing, seed harvesting, cleaning and more.

Materials kit is included in registration fee and includes: potting media, container, seeds and crop specific growing information.  Seeds will include: Hibiscus coccineus f. Alba, Echinacea pallida, Liatris, Millet, Ornamental peppers, Scabiosa, Zinnia haageana, and Texas bluebonnets .

Registration: $26 Garden members /$30 non-member.  

 

 

SEED STARTING WORKSHOP: VEGGIES

 The gold standard for backyard gardeners is a home grown tomato. Join us for a workshop dedicated to folks in pursuit of a garden full of delicious home grown veggies! A variety of seeds are included, as well as all the supplies you will need to get them started. Together we will explore seed selection, seed planting, and transplanting outdoors. Tulsa has a challenging growing climate, but strategies for both cool season and hot season veggies will be discussed. Join us and start preparing your garden or patio containers for your 2022 veggies!

Materials include seeds, growing tray, potting media, labels, and crop specific information included in the kit. Seeds include: Spinach, Spicy pepper, Sweet pepper, Tomato, Okra, Radish, Tomatillo ‘Toma Verde’, and Carrot.

Registration: $16 for Garden Members; $20 for non-members.

 

 

 

SEED STARTING 101

Ready to work in your garden this year, but not sure where to start? Seeds are the very best way to get to know plants! Even first time gardeners can find success in the garden with the right seeds. Our instructors have selected seed varieties that are suited to our local growing conditions, so that you can grow and harvest your own veggies and flowers. All experience levels are welcome in this class. We cover the basics, will provide everything you need to get started, and provide basic gardening information to help you grow your own. You will also be better prepared when shopping those tempting seed displays that pop up everywhere in the spring!

Materials kit is included with class registration and include a variety of seeds, growing tray, potting media, labels, and crop specific information. Seeds included: Cosmos, Zinnia, Green beans, Basil ‘Elidia’, Tomato, Radish, Tomatillo ‘Toma Verde’ and Toscano kale.

Registration: $16 for Garden Members; $20 for non-members.
